How to protect yourself from devastatingly effective phishing emails

Phishing is one of the most common cybersecurity concerns there are, and something that we each need to be aware of if we are to avoid their potential damage. As one of the most significant threats facing businesses and individuals, it helps if you know how a phishing attempt is normally made successful so that you can more effectively keep out of the potential danger of it. Given that 90% of cybersecurity incidents involve phishing, this couldn’t be any more important.

If you want to protect yourself against phishing attacks, you need to understand how they work. The person who knows how to put together a perfect phishing email will also be perfectly placed to protect themselves and their business from such attempts from other people. So what goes into a successful phishing email, and what are the usual contents?

First of all, a phishing email will be significantly more effective if it comes internally from within the business, rather than from an external address. It is also more likely to be responded to as the sender wants it to be if it contains an element of potential danger, rather than an offer of some extraordinary benefit (as was the case in the early days of phishing). You therefore need to be particularly wary of these influencing factors in any emails you open.
